The Royal GeographicalSociety of Queensland Ltd
RGSQ Lecture Series
Dr Allison Rifai, Executive Manager, Research and Communications, Queensland Government’s Office of the Inspector-General of Emergency Management.
Geography is about the interconnections between people, places, and the environment …. so is disaster management. Disaster management has evolved from early civil defence capabilities through to navigating the complex, compound and cascading disasters we see today. During this presentation I will take you on a journey through the evolution of disaster management and talk about the role of a geographer within Queensland’s disaster management arrangements.
Dr Allison Rifai leads and implements the Queensland Disaster Management Research Framework, building collaborations between the disaster management and tertiary research sectors. Allison has more than 20 years operational disaster management experience in roles across planning, preparedness, response and recovery in Queensland. She has worked operationally during disasters such as the 2011 Brisbane floods and Cyclone Yasi, as well as deployments to support local governments to develop recovery plans and governance arrangements following disasters. Allison has a PhD in geography from the Queensland University of Technology and is an Industry Adjunct with the Cities Institute at Griffith University.
