The Society

The Royal Geographical Society of Queensland promotes the study of geography and encourages a greater understanding and enjoyment of the world around us. The Society was established in 1885. It is a non-profit organisation that brings together people from all walks of life who share an interest in geography.

This is the closest building to the XXXX Brewery on the non-city side. Office hours are generally 9.00 am to 5.00 pm, Monday to Friday. However, we have a small staff so it is always wise to check the office will be open before visiting.

How the Society will achieve its purpose during the next few years is outlined in its Strategic Plan. Our main activities and projects include:

a programme of trips and illustrated lectures

ongoing support for geographical education, in particular the National Geographic Channel Australian Geography Competition, and working to improve the status and quality of geography in schools, for instance through contributing to the forthcoming national geography curriculum

organizing major projects, e.g. our current one Queensland by Degrees, and our previous scientific studies – 2007 Cravens Peak in south-west Queensland, 2002 Gulf of Carpentaria studies, 2000 White Mountains near Hughenden, 1997 North East Herald Cay in the Coral Sea, 1995 Musselbrook Reserve in north-west Queensland, 1992 Heathlands in northern Cape York Peninsula

The Society's Rules (or Constitution) may be downloaded here. In accordance with Queensland law, the Society wishes to inform members and prospective members that it holds public liability insurance cover of $10,000,000.
