Investigating the Investigator

Overview of unit The unit utilises the journal entries of Matthew Flinders, while he was exploring the coast of Queensland in his ship, the Investigator. We hope your students come to know of the humanity of Matthew Flinders and his crew whilst undertaking this unit. The unit is designed to explore the genre of journal entries and script. This is made possible by reading the entries which are provided, extracting information from them and then recreating from that information a role play. The lessons are detailed in terms of being accessible to the students as they are presently written. It is envisaged that Year 7 students could work independently through the unit, without too much assistance from the teacher. Younger students could work with this unit but they would obviously require more teacher assistance. On the other hand, this unit could act as a base for older students who could then go on with extension activities. Learning activities The learning activities are written to be (possibly) read directly by the students and to enable them to work through the unit relatively independently (in pairs), depending on the Level of the student. These activities can cater for Level 3-6 students. The differentiation which may need to be made between each Level is the degree to which the student requires teacher assistance in order to progress through the activity. Link to Learning activities. Assessment and Outcomes The script can be used as an assessment item within the unit and/or the performance of the script may be used. It is up to the individual teacher to create the criteria for assessment – we are providing the base and offering suggestions on the outcomes which can be attained through this unit. Outcomes are from the syllabuses currently being introduced in Queensland schools. Although this unit is primarily literacy focussed the Literacy outcomes are not yet available.
