Lectures and workshops

A selection of Flinders-related lectures, student workshops and other activities were held in many centres across Queensland

Public lectures and talks:

  • Paul Brunton, the Curator of the exhibition, Matthew Flinders: the Ultimate Voyage, touring from the Mitchell Library, State Library of New South Wales, on Matthew Flinders and his voyaging at Gladstone, Townsville, Weipa, Sweers Island and Karumba;

  • David Mabberley, a Professor at the University of Leiden and Honorary Research Associate at Sydney's Royal Botanic Gardens, on Flinders' Naturalist: Robert Brown in Australia and after, and Ferdinand Bauer: unsurpassed illustrator of natural history, at Gladstone, Brisbane, Cooktown, Cairns and Weipa

  • Other speakers, including Rod Ridley and Manfred Cross, on aspects of Flinders' life, skills in navigation and contributions to history, in Brisbane.

Student activities and workshops:

  • on botanical illustration at Brisbane Botanic Gardens and Gladstone Botanic Gardens

  • floor talks and school visits associated with the SLNSW travelling exhibition at Gladstone, Townsville, Weipa, Karumba and Sweers Island

  • on Flinders' life and achievements at schools in Gladstone, Karumba and Bentinck Island and working with modern day scientists at Weipa

These were organised by the Flinders 2002 Queensland Committee, State Library of New South Wales, Brisbane Botanic Gardens and the Gladstone Regional Art Gallery and Museum.
