Learning activities

Matthew Flinders and his team contributed greatly to an understanding of Australia. Students today can learn from this voyage and at the same time meet many syllabus requirements in The Arts, English, Health and Physical Education, Mathematics, Science, Studies of Society and Environment, and Technology.

This section of the website has been developed to provide opportunities for students to share in the adventures of the Investigator team, to learn about their lives as explorers and sailors and understand the contributions they made.

The activities available online are:

  • Matthew Flinders and the Circumnavigation of Australia, an example of an integrated unit approach to incorporating studies on Matthew Flinders and the voyage of the Investigator in 1801-1803 into the Queensland curriculum at Level 3.

  • Investigating the Investigator, a unit designed to explore the genre of journal entries and script. It can be adapted for students in Levels 3 - 6.

  • Galleys, Grub and Grog, a unit dealing with issues of health and diet on board ship for Level 3.

  • Flinders and Australian Coastal Landforms, a detailed, well illustrated unit dealing with landforms around the Australian coast in areas visited by Flinders. Applicable mainly to Levels 4 - 6 SOSE, 5 - 6 SOSE Geography, and Year 11 - 12 Geography.

  • Assorted Learning Activities. This section provides a series of units and activities in varying amounts of detail for Levels 1 - 6 in the areas of The Arts, English, Health and Physical Education, Science, Study of Society and Environment and SOSEGeography and Technology.

Included with the activities is a wide range of online resources and other references. These have been consolidated on the web pages Links and References.

The activities have been designed by practising teachers to meet Key Learning Area (KLA) outcomes. While they have been written for this Flinders 2002 Bicentenary they are intended to have relevance to the curriculum generally. In keeping with this, the website will be maintained as long as it remains relevant.

We hope you enjoy using these activities with your students and that students who visit this site individually will be inspired by Matthew flinders as he was by his first reading of Robinson Crusoe. Please feel free to contribute ideas or reports of student activities to be added to this site.
